Biden administration would ask Congress for more funds for Ukraine if necessary
This was stated by the White House national security coordinator, John Kirby, who spoke at an online briefing on Friday, Ukrinform's own correspondent reports.
He said that it remains unclear how long the war Russia unleashed will last, so it would be irresponsible not to do everything possible to create an estimate of Ukraine’s needs for the first quarter of the next fiscal year (after September 30, 2023) and submit a corresponding funding request to Congress.
Commenting on the size of the latest assistance package for Ukraine in the amount of over $20 billion, with which the U.S. administration appealed to legislators, Kirby emphasized that this amount is based on thorough calculations. However, if this money proves to be insufficient, the government will make efforts to obtain additional funding.
"We won’t be bashful about going back to Congress if we feel like we’ve got to go back and ask for more beyond the first quarter of next year of if there need to be adjustments to what we’re asking for," Kirby added.
As Ukrinform reported earlier, on Thursday, the Joe Biden administration filed an official letter with Congress regarding the allocation of additional funding to address critical needs, including about $24 billion for aid to Ukraine, as well as for countries affected by the war unleashed by Russia.
