According to the Zurich police department, a 15-year-old suspect is responsible for the stabbing of the 50-year-old victim who is in critical condition. Law enforcement have apprehended the attacker and launched an investigation into the suspected hate crime.
The Blick news site said that a witness to the attack said that the assailant was laughing at the time of his arrest. Initial reports suggested that he yelled antisemitic and anti-Israel phrases during the arrest.
In the aftermath of the attack, the the Swiss Federation of Jewish Communities announced a comprehensive review of its current security measures protecting the Jewish community.
"It is assumed that no further threat to Jewish people and institutions is expected at the moment. Nevertheless, all members of the Jewish community are called upon to behave cautiously and prudently until further notice," the federation said. "The SIG is deeply shocked that a community member fell victim to such an attack. Physical attacks on Jewish people in Switzerland are very rare. The Jewish community has been spared from such life-threatening attacks for the past two decades. However, there has been a significant increase in such physical attacks since Oct. 7. The SIG's thoughts are with the victim and his relatives. We pray for a full and speedy recovery."
