Speaker Stefanchuk: Speculations about specific election date misleading

All speculations regarding a specific election date are premature and misleading, according to Verkhovna Rada Speaker Ruslan Stefanchuk.

He said this in comments to Ukrinform.

"Once again, our information space is flooded with a 'sensation' from a politician who selectively follows laws but always has 'sources.' This time, anonymous informants -- somewhere between the printing plant and the President's Office -- allegedly confirmed the election date as October 26, 2025," he said.

Stefanchuk said that MP Petro Poroshenko, not long ago, had himself insisted that discussing elections during wartime is harmful and undermines national unity.

"But who is now actively raising this issue? Perhaps, instead of stirring the debate over an unsold cup of coffee, it would be useful to flip through the Law of Ukraine 'On the Legal Regime of Martial Law.' Article 19 clearly states that during martial law, presidential, parliamentary, and local elections, as well as referendums, are prohibited," Stefanchuk said.

He stressed that this legal provision does not allow exceptions, meaning any speculations about an election date are misleading the public.

Stefanchuk stressed that members of Poroshenko's political party signed an agreement during the Jean Monnet Dialogue for Peace and Democracy, confirming that elections should not take place under martial law.

"So why the election fever? Has someone's personal 'martial law' already ended or is about to?" Stefanchuk said.

Earlier, Petro Poroshenko, the fifth President of Ukraine and leader of the European Solidarity party, claimed that Ukraine had already begun preparing for elections, citing specific indicators. He also stated that the government plans to hold elections on October 26, 2025.
