China supports fair, just probe into Pahalgam attack

ISLAMABAD  -  China yesterday supported Pakistan’s efforts for fair and just investigations into the at-tack in Pahalgam, occupied Kashmir.

Beijing welcomed all efforts aimed at reducing tensions following the recent attack in Pahalgam and called for a fair and impartial investigation into the incident. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun emphasized that as a neighbour to both Pakistan and India, China hopes the two nations will exercise restraint, manage their differences through dia-logue and consultation, and work together to maintain peace and stability in South Asia.

“India and Pakistan are both important countries in the region. Their peaceful coexistence is crucial for regional peace and development,” Guo Jiakun responded to a media query. He stressed that China supports any initiative that helps cool down the current situation and upholds justice.

Tensions between Pakistan and India have historically flared over incidents in Kashmir. The recent at-tack in Pahalgam has once again raised fears of heightened conflict in an already volatile area.

In Islamabad yesterday, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, chaired a high-level meeting to discuss India’s move to unilaterally suspend the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT), a key agree-ment brokered in 1960 that governs water sharing between the two countries.

The meeting was attended by the Ministers for Law and Justice, Water Resources, the Attorney Gen-eral, senior officials, and technical experts.

DPM Ishaq Dar underscored Pakistan’s determination to protect its rightful share of water under the Treaty, criticizing India’s decision as a violation of international law, the principles of inter-state rela-tions, and the Treaty’s own provisions, the Foreign Office said in a statement.

He warned that weaponizing water resources threatens regional stability and the livelihoods of Paki-stan’s 240 million citizens who depend on the Indus River system.

Dar reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to advocating for the full implementation of the Treaty to safe-guard its water rights and secure the well-being of its people.
