Polling underway for Sindh’s vacant Senate seat

Polling is currently underway at the Sindh Assembly to fill the vacant general seat in the Senate, following the passing of veteran PPP Senator Taj Haider.

Voting began at 9:00 AM and will continue uninterrupted until 4:00 PM in the Sindh Assembly Hall. The ruling Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) has nominated Waqar Mehdi as its candidate, while the Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) has fielded Nighat Mirza.

With a dominant presence in the provincial assembly—holding 116 seats—the PPP is in a strong position, compared to MQM-P’s 36 members.

Meanwhile, PTI-backed independent lawmakers have announced a boycott of the election. PTI’s parliamentary leader, Shabbir Ali Qureshi, confirmed that none of their members will participate in the voting process.

The Election Commission of Sindh earlier stated that all necessary arrangements for a smooth polling process have been finalized.
