Pakistan, Italy commit to boost cooperation

ISLAMABAD  -  Pakistan and Italy on Wednesday agreed to expand cooperation in trade, security, and labour mobility during talks between Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar and Italian Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi.

According to a statement issued by the Foreign Office, Ishaq Dar appreciated the positive direction of ties between the two countries, adding that existing institutional frameworks had laid a solid base for future engagement. He stressed the need to tap further opportunities in trade, investment, education, and security.

Ishaq Dar termed the signing of a memorandum of understanding on migration and labour mobility an important step forward. Matteo Piantedosi welcomed the progress in bilateral relations and said Italy was keen to work more closely across key areas of shared interest.

Ishaq Dar also briefed the Italian minister on regional tensions, referring to recent Indian actions that, he said, violated the UN Charter and international law. He said Pakistan had shown restraint despite serious provocations.

The Italian side expressed concern over the situation and conveyed condolences over civilian casualties. Matteo Piantedosi said restraint and dialogue were essential and offered Italy’s support for efforts to maintain regional peace.

The two ministers agreed to stay in close contact and explore avenues for future cooperation.
