WHO, Pakistan launch 26 vaccination centres for underserved areas

In a significant step toward improving public health access, the World Health Organization (WHO) and the government of Pakistan have announced the establishment of 26 new vaccination centres across the country, aimed at reaching over 750,000 people in underserved areas.

The initiative, funded by GAVI, the Vaccine Alliance, is part of a broader effort to strengthen Pakistan’s Expanded Programme on Immunization and improve access to essential healthcare services. The centres will be strategically located in regions with low vaccination coverage and limited access to basic health care.

According to a press release, 13 prefabricated centres are already operational in Punjab, Pakistan-administered Kashmir, and Gilgit-Baltistan. The remaining 13 are currently in the procurement phase and will be constructed in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Designed with sustainability in mind, the centres will be solar-powered to maintain uninterrupted services during power outages and natural disasters. This climate-resilient approach not only ensures continuity of care but also supports environmental sustainability.

WHO Representative in Pakistan, Dr. Dapeng Luo, stressed the importance of equitable healthcare. “Delivering health for all and leaving no one behind is our core mission. These centres will help reinforce primary health care and enhance emergency response capabilities across Pakistan,” he said.

The new facilities mark a milestone in Pakistan’s public health infrastructure, offering life-saving vaccines and essential services to communities that have long remained beyond the reach of mainstream health systems.
