  • Finance ministry terms report on Dar being 'handed' budget-making process 'misleading, incorrect'
    Dawn - 10:08 May 14, 2026
The Ministry of Finance said on Thursday that a media report claiming Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar had been handed the budget-making process was “misleading” and “factually incorrect”. The clarification came after a report published by The Express Tribune said the government had “handed over the responsibility of making the new budget to Dar after it found the initial work below par”. According to the report, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had constituted a Dar-led committee to “review, analyse and present tax policy proposals” formulated by the Tax Policy Office working under the Finance Division. Citing a notification, it added: “With the formation of the committee, the final responsibility to finalise roughly Rs215 billion to Rs230bn in new taxes and to grant any tax relief has been handed over to Dar.” Moreover, the report said, the responsibility for finalising the enforcement measures had been handed over to a committee led by Minister for Economic Affairs Ahad Khan Cheema. • Finance ministry, SBP show optimism over economic growth amid expected $1.2bn tranche from IMF
    Dawn - 18:40 May 07, 2026
ISLAMABAD: The Ministry of Finance and the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) on Thursday showed unanimous optimism over economic growth and achieving fiscal and current account targets despite the regional crisis. The development comes amid anticipated approval of disbursements worth over $1.2bn by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) on Friday and the scheduled visit of another mission for next year’s budget formulation on May 15. Testifying before the National Assembly’s Standing Committee on Finance and Revenue, SBP Governor Jameel Ahmed confirmed that the SBP had purchased about $27bn from the market over the past three years, including $4.5bn so far this year, to boost foreign exchange reserves. He said the expected $1.2bn disbursements from the IMF would take foreign exchange reserves beyond $17bn by the end of the current fiscal year — enough for three months of import cover. Meanwhile, Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb said that Pakistan had received regulatory approval from China for the inaugural laun...

  • Finance ministry flags risk to Pakistan's external sector amid global uncertainty
    Dawn - 14:18 Apr 30, 2026
ISLAMABAD: Despite a healthy primary balance of 3.3 per cent of gross domestic product (GDP) at home, the Ministry of Finance on Thursday warned that Pakistan’s external sector may be facing risks owing to emerging global uncertainties and regional supply disruptions amid a higher rate of inflation. “External demand may remain supportive in some markets but the balance of risk becomes less favourable than in a pre-war setting,” the ministry said in its Monthly Economic Update and Outlook for April 2026. It said the ongoing Middle East conflict was posing new risks and heightened uncertainty regarding the macroeconomic outlook. The ministry forecast April’s inflation rate — measured by the consumer price index — at 8 to 9pc, significantly higher than 7.3pc in March. It highlighted that the overall primary surplus in the first eight months of the current fiscal year was recorded at 3.3pc of GDP (Rs4.319 trillion) as compared to 3pc (Rs3.452tr) last year. During July-March Fiscal Year 2026, the Federal Board of ...

    Dawn - 09:58 Dec 20, 2025
The Ministry of Finance said on Saturday that the federal government released provincial shares under the National Finance Commission (NFC) on a fortnightly basis, adding that “no outstanding liabilities exist in this regard”. The statement from the ministry came a day after Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi accused the federal government of stalling development in the merged tribal districts by not disbursing funds under the NFC resource-distribution formula for the current fiscal year. In the statement released on Saturday, the ministry reaffirmed the federal government’s “continued commitment to ensuring timely, transparent, and sustained financial transfers” to KP under the NFC Award and beyond. It said that under the 7th NFC Award, KP’s share was determined at 14.62 per cent of the provincial share in the divisible pool. “In recognition of the extraordinary burden borne by the province during the war on terror, an additional one per cent of the undivided divisible pool was allocated exclusi...

  • Finance secretary says ban on cryptocurrency still in place, stresses need for regulation
    Dawn - 14:59 May 29, 2025
Finance Secretary Imdadullah Bosal on Thursday said that the ban on cryptocurrency was still in place across Pakistan, stressing the need for its regulation. The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) does not recognise crypto assets, which are digital currencies in which transactions are verified and recorded by a decentralised system. The SBP issued a formal notice in 2022 advising the general public to be cautious of and refrain from trading cryptocurrencies. During today’s meeting of the National Assembly Standing Committee on Finance, PPP MNA Sharmila Farooqi introduced a bill on digital currency regulations, prompting different remarks from committee members. “There are no regulations for cryptocurrency,” Farooqui said, adding that since Pakistan was moving towards digital currency, cryptocurrency should be decentralised. She highlighted Pakistan’s exit from the ‘grey list’ of the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) — a global money laundering and terrorism financing watchdog — and said, “How will Pakistan protect...
