Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Secretary General Salman Akram Raja on Wednesday clarified that Chief Minister Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Ali Amin Gandapur’s recent remarks regarding the construction of the Kalabagh Dam may represent his personal opinion and not official party policy.

PESHAWAR - Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur on Tuesday said that a very important national project, the Kalabagh Dam, is being stopped because of politics.

PPP and PTI leaders took exception on Tuesday to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur conditionally backing the construction of Kalabagh Dam, pointing out that three provincial assemblies had adopted resolutions opposing the project in the past. Gandapur said a day earlier that projects like the construction of Kalabagh Dam were necessary for the “sake of the future generation”, but also added that prior to such initiatives, reservations of all stakeholders, including provinces, should be addressed. Doubling down on his comments, today, he said that the very important national project was being stopped because of politics. “Not building the Kalabagh Dam is unfair to the country and to our children’s future,” he said. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur has underscored the importance of building the Kalabagh Dam, terming it vital for Pakistan’s future.

Flooding at Punjab’s Kalabagh and Chashma on the Indus river reached a “medium” level on Friday, prompting the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) to issue a high-level flood warning for the two points, as water flows surged due to heavy monsoon rains. Rescue operations continued in Punjab after recent deadly rains wreaked havoc and claimed at least 63 lives across the province. The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has forecasted that five more such spells of rain are expected in the coming days, leading to rising water levels, the Associated Press of Pakistan reported. The next spell is expected to begin from July 21 and last till July 28, while the fifth is expected in the first week of August, the sixth in the second week of August and the seventh in its third week. “The flow of water in rivers is increasing due to monsoon rains and glacial melting,” a statement issued by the PDMA spokesperson said.
