  • Inquiry ordered after teenage girl allegedly killed in crossfire between police, suspected robbers in Karachi’s Landhi

    KARACHI: Police on Friday launched an inquiry into the death of a teenage girl in Karachi’s Landhi area, who was struck and killed by a stray bullet while travelling in a rickshaw. Her relatives alleged that she was killed in the crossfire of a gunfight between police and suspected robbers. Landhi Station House Officer (SHO) Salahuddin Qazi told Dawn that a 17-year-old resident of the Lines Area had accompanied her mother to visit a relative in Landhi. She was returning home in a rickshaw when a bullet passed through the vehicle and struck her in the chest. She sustained critical wounds and was transported to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC), where doctors pronounced her dead. The victim’s uncle told media persons at the hospital that his niece was gunned down during crossfire between police and suspects in the area.     KARACHI: Heavy vehicles’ reign of terror continued in the metropolis on Thursday as a female motorcyclist was killed after being hit by a trailer. In recent months, the city has witnessed a rise in traffic accidents, especially involving heavy vehicles such as dumper trucks and water tankers. Quaidabad’s Station House Officer (SHO) Mohammad Ali Shah told Dawn that the driver of a 10-wheeler hit the 20-year-old female motorcyclist on the main Mehran Highway near MN Textile in Landhi. “She suffered critical injuries and died on the spot,” Shah said. “The driver managed to escape from the spot, leaving behind the heavy vehicle that was impounded by the police,” he said. The body was moved to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) for legal formalities.   • 5 injured as blaze in Karachi’s Landhi factory almost under control

    A fire that broke out at a factory in Landhi on Sunday could not be fully controlled even after more than 30 hours of firefighting efforts, according to a Rescue 1122 spokesperson. Rescue 1122 spokesperson Hassaanul Haseeb told Dawn.com that the “fire has been brought under control to a large extent”, however, more time is required to completely control the blaze. “There are flames burning in the affected factories. It may take more time to fully control the fire and complete the cooling process,” he said. The spokesperson said rescue teams are still present on the third day of Eid and continuously engaged in extinguishing the fire.     A fire that broke out at a factory in Landhi on Sunday is still burning and five people have been injured in the blaze, according to a Rescue 1122 spokesperson.
