At least one passenger died while 33 were injured after four coaches of the Karachi-bound train derailed and overturned late last night in Punjab’s Lodhran, Rescue 1122 said on Sunday. According to a statement from Rescue 1122, the Awami Express train was travelling from Lahore to Karachi when the incident happened. “Four coaches of the train suddenly derailed due to brake failure near the Lodhran Railway Station”, the statement said. “The incident left one person dead while another 33 were injured, out of which 11 received medical assistance at the site of the incident, and the rest were immediately rushed to the District Hospital in Lodhran.” It further said that two critically injured persons were transferred to a hospital in Bahawalpur. Expressing grief over the loss of life, Minister for Railways Muhammad Hanif Abbasi vowed to take disciplinary action against those responsible for the incident. Police arrested a suspect with an extensive criminal record in Punjab’s Lodhran district, while two other suspected dacoits escaped during an exchange of fire, police officials said on Thursday. A first information report (FIR) was filed against the suspect at the City Kahror Pakka Police Station on the behalf of the state under sections 324 (attempt to murder), 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty), 186 (obstructing public servant in discharge of public functions), 34 (common intention) of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC) for “deliberately attacking police officers with the intention to kill and assisting his accomplices escape”. Police recovered a woman who was abducted nine years ago and arrested her suspected kidnappers in the Lodhran district of Punjab, the district’s Crime Control Department (CCD) said on Monday. In a statement, the CCD elaborated that the police conducted an operation and recovered the woman in the Mani Yazman area, while also arresting four men allegedly involved in the kidnapping. The statement added that a case was registered against them and the suspects were wanted by the Saddar Dunyapur police. “The accused were absconding for nine years and the recovery of the kidnapped woman was a challenge,” the police spokesperson said in the statement. The spokesperson added that the suspects were arrested after stringent efforts of the IT team and the Dunyapur Circle police team.
