Nine terrorists of the banned Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) group have been killed in a joint operation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Upper Dir district, the police said on Tuesday. A statement issued by Upper Dir District Police Officer (DPO) Muhammad Bilal said the police and Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) conducted a targeted operation against the TTP in the district. “Nine terrorists were killed in the operation that has been going on for three days, and the bodies of five were recovered,” he said, adding that 10 police personnel were injured in firing by terrorists and two locals were also killed. A joint operation by the Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) and police in Upper Dir, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, left eight terrorists of Fitna al-Khawarij dead, officials confirmed.

A search operation was launched on Sunday after two girls fell from a makeshift bridge over the Gwaldai River in the Shahi Banda area of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Upper Dir district and went missing, police said. Zaman Shah, a sub-divisional police officer, told Dawn.com that two young girls — namely 15-year-old Samira Bibi and 12-year-old Javeria Bibi — were crossing the Gwaldai river when they fell into it and were feared to have drowned. The official said the incident occurred within the limits of Shahi Doba’s Patrak police station, adding that the flow of water had increased recently due to glaciers melting. Shah said that the search continues for the bodies in the river as the Rescue 1122 and locals have not succeeded yet, adding that he is present at the spot along with other officials to monitor the operation. A man allegedly gunned down three people, including a child, for ‘honour’ in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Upper Dir district, police said on Monday. Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Zaman Shah told Dawn.com, “A man, a woman and her three-year-old daughter were killed by her husband in a suspected ‘honour’ killing incident in the Dadband area of Upper Dir.” He said that the suspect allegedly killed a man who was said to be a herbalist and used to visit houses for treatment in the area. He said, “[The suspect] was said to be mentally ill and worked as a labourer in Islamabad,” adding that he had come to the village a few days earlier and left his wife and daughter at home with his uncle. The official added that initial information revealed that the herbalist went to the uncle’s home where the incident occurred. “The suspect shot dead the herbalist with a pistol outside the house and then he went inside, killing his wife and daughter,” Shah said, adding that the police launched an investigation into the matter.
