QUETTA: A division bench of the Balochistan High Court (BHC) on Wednesday admitted for regular hearing a petition filed by Dr Mahrang Baloch, the chief organiser of the Baloch Yakjehti Committee (BYC), challenging the life imprisonment sentence awarded to her by an anti-terrorism court (ATC), and issued notices to the respondents. A BHC bench comprising Justices Gul Hassan Tareen and Najmuddin Mengal heard the matter and ordered notices to be issued to the relevant authorities, seeking their response. During the proceedings, Addi­tional Advocate General Akbar Shah appeared on behalf of the provincial government, while advocates Jadain Dashti and Nadia Baloch represented the petitioner. Dr Mahrang has challenged the judgement of the Quetta anti-terrorism court, which sentenced her to life imprisonment in a case related to the killing of a security personnel member. QUETTA: Justice Rozi Khan Barrech of the Balochistan High Court took the oath of acting chief justice of the BHC, after the retirement of Chief Justice Ejaz Ahmed Swati on Friday. Balochistan Governor Sheikh Jaffar Khan Mandokhail administered the oath to the acting chief justice at a simple ceremony held at Governor House. The oath-taking ceremony was attended by retired Justice Amir-ul-Mulk Mengal, retired Justice Amanullah Khan Yasinzai, judges of Balochistan High Court, President of Supreme Court Bar Association Mian Rauf Atta, President of the High Court Bar Association Advocate Attaullah Langove, Inspector General of Police Moazzam Jah Ansari and a large number of senior lawyers and government officials. The Judicial Commission of Pakistan (JCP) on Monday nominated Justice Ejaz Swati as the top judge of the Balochistan High Court (BHC). A press release issued today by the Supreme Court’s public relations officer said a “JCP meeting of the judicial commission was held to consider the nominations for the BHC chief justice’s appointment. “The Commission, by consensus, has nominated Mr Muhammad Ejaz Swati, Acting Chief Justice High Court of Balochistan, for his appointment as Chief Justice of the High Court of Balochistan,” the release said. A circular from the JCP secretary to the prime minister’s principal secretary requested that further action be taken in this regard. Justice Swati had taken his oath as the acting BHC chief justice on February 14. According to his profile, Justice Swati was born on June 6, 1963, in Quetta.
