  • Lesco teams ‘harassing’ consumers for recovery of bills

    LAHORE: Consumers have criticised the Lahore Electric Supply Company (Lesco) field officials for allegedly harassing and disconnecting power supply unlawfully on the pretext of recovery of dues in the city. On the other hand, the office of the Lahore commissioner has also decided to take the matter up with senior Lesco officials in a meeting scheduled for Tuesday (July 14) after it was approached to intervene and resolve the matter. “A Lesco team came to our house on Saturday and started pressuring us to pay the bill immediately, failing which they threatened to remove the meter, disconnecting the power supply. I told the team that my bill is for just the month of July and the due date has just passed. There is no previous bill pending to be paid on my part. So, I thought to pay the bill with the next month’s bill,” revealed a consumer of Attari Saroba on Ferozepur Road.   • 'Strict action' taken, says power minister after Khawaja Asif's claim of Lesco employees' corruption

    Power Minister Awais Leghari on Sunday said that “strict action” had been taken against a Lahore Electric Supply Company (Lesco) line superintendent after Defence Minister Khawaja Asif complained of financial corruption. In an X post on Saturday, Asif said he had sought a former official’s help for the repair of a transformer in his domestic employee’s village. The minister alleged, “[Lesco] employees took Rs80,000 to repair the transformer. The villagers collected donations to pay the Lesco employees, but they were not given a receipt. “You can imagine the rest. This happens even when a former power minister, who is currently a cabinet member, intervenes. What will be a common consumer facing?” He reiterated that while the villagers had paid the amount, “Lesco refuses to give them a receipt”.   • Lesco restores power to Lahore’s Bahria Town after payment of dues

    The Lahore Electric Supply Company (Lesco) restored power supply to four housing projects in Bahria Town Lahore after the society’s administration paid outstanding bills amounting to Rs682 million. “The power supply has been restored to four Bahria town projects, including main Bahria Town near Mohlanwal,” a Lesco spokesperson told Dawn. The power supply was suspended yesterday, inviting criticism from the residents, who also announced holding a protest demonstration in front of the Bahria Town offices after Friday prayers on this issue. According to Lesco CEO Mr Ramzan Butt, the last date for bill payment was November 21, which was extended to November 23 on the request of the housing society’s officials.     The Sheikhupura Police arrested a security guard of the Lahore Electric Supply Company (Lesco) on Wednesday after the Power Division suspended him for dragging an elderly customer out of the distribution company’s premises. Footage of the incident, making the rounds on social media since July 1, showed a Lesco guard dragging an elderly woman along the ground by her arm while removing her from the premises. According to a Power Division statement issued today, the incident of misbehaviour took place on June 30. “The security guard was suspended immediately [and] a first information report was filed. The security guard is now in police custody,” the statement added. “Breaking the law and humiliating the public will not be tolerated,” the Power Division warned, highlighting that it took strict action against the guard’s misconduct.
