Nine people remain in a critical condition following a train crash on Friday near Bedford, about 100 kilometres north of London, in which the driver of one of the services was killed. Two passenger trains bound for London collided at around 5:15pm local time (9:15pm PKT) on Friday. The driver of one of the trains died at the scene. Peter Knapp, a doctor who said on a social media site he was on board one of the trains, described a “sudden crash” with one carriage off the rails and said he had sustained minor injuries. Sky News cited him as telling the Press Association that some passengers were unable to speak and had injuries, including broken legs. Providing an update on those injured in the crash on Saturday, British Transport Police Chief Constable Lucy D’Orsi said more than 80 people had received hospital treatment on Friday night. LAHORE: Nine suspects were killed, while two police officials were injured in separate encounters with the Crime Control Department (CCD) in various parts of the province on Tuesday. In Lahore, six suspects were allegedly killed while two police officials were injured during separate ‘encounters’ with the CCD. A police official claimed that CCD officials conducted a raid in the Sundar area to arrest suspects following reports that wanted robbers were present there. He claimed the armed men hiding there suddenly opened fire on the raiding team, leaving two police personnel wounded. The police also returned the fire and two suspected robbers were found dead. They were later identified as Alam Sher and Hashim, wanted in over 60 cases in various police stations of the city, the official claimed. Nine people were killed and 10 wounded in an early morning shooting in a township south-west of Johannesburg and authorities have launched a manhunt for the suspects, the South African Police Service said on Sunday. The incident occurred just before 1am local time (4am PKT) at a licensed tavern in Johannesburg’s Bekkersdal township, the police said in a statement. About 12 unknown suspects in a white minibus and a silver sedan opened fire at the tavern patrons and continued shooting randomly as they fled the scene, the police said, adding the motive for the shooting would be determined by investigation. The injured have been taken to medical facilities for treatment, police added. Bekkersdal is part of the Rand West City local municipality, whose website describes the township as being an area characterised by high levels of unemployment and poverty due to a decline in gold mining. South Africa, Africa’s biggest economy, has one of the world’s highest murder rates, averaging about 60 a day.
