    PESHAWAR: A Pak-Afghan peace jirga will be held in Peshawar on March 31 to urge the leadership of both countries to immediately de-escalate tensions and work towards peace, former chief secretary Arbab Shehzad Khan said here on Saturday. Speaking at a news conference at Peshawar Press Club, Mr Khan, who is head of Aspire Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, which, along with Qaumi Islahi Tehreek, is organising the jirga, said the forum would be attended by national and political leaders, tribal elders, religious scholars, members of civil society, traders and media representatives from KP as well as Afghans residing in Pakistan. Qaumi Islahi Tehreek chief Haji Sohrab Ali Khan was also present at the presser. Mr Shehzad Khan stressed that war was not a solution to any problem and that ultimately issues were resolved through dialogue.   • Cash, Rs210m worth gold stolen in Peshawar bank heist

    PESHAWAR: Robbers broke into a National Bank branch on the eve of Eidul Fitr, exploiting a lack of overnight security to steal more than one million rupees in cash and jewellery worth Rs210 million, police said. The incident occurred on Friday night at a National Bank branch on Kohat Road. The robbers entered the facility from an open area at the back, using cutters and other tools to break in. Police said that with no guard on duty due to a “no security shift policy at night”, the robbers were able to steal Rs1.37m in cash from the registers. “They broke lockers and stole around 400 tolas of gold from safety lockers,” a police official said, adding that a gas cylinder was also used to cut through steel. The total value of the stolen jewellery was estimated at Rs 210m.     PESHAWAR: Police repulsed an attack by unidentified militants, who targeted a police checkpoint in the Passani village located on the outskirts of Peshawar, officials said. Peshawar Capital City Police Officer (CCPO) Dr Mian Saeed Ahmed told Dawn that “the militants attacked a police post and an exchange of fire also took place, but the policemen, deployed at the facility, retaliated, forcing the militants to escape.” The CCPO added that the situation was “under control”. No casualties or injuries were reported as a result of the attack; however, the nature of the attack and physical losses are yet to be ascertained. On November 26, unidentified persons blew up a gas pipeline in Hameed Khan Machine area, some five miles south of the police post in Passani.     President Asif Ali Zardari on Thursday approved the confirmation of a total of 27 additional judges of the Sindh, Lahore, and Peshawar high courts. According to a statement issued on Thursday by the president’s secretariat, the approval was given in accordance with the recommendations of the Judicial Commission of Pakistan (JCP). For the Sindh High Court (SHC), the statement said the president had approved the confirmation of all 10 additional judges recommended by the JCP: Justices Miran Muhammad Shah, Tasneem Sultana, Riazat Ali Sahar, Muhammad Hasan, Abdul Hamid Bhurgi, Jan Ali Junejo, Nisar Ahmed Bhanbhro, Ali Haider ‘Ada’, Muhammad Osman Ali Hadi and Muhammad Jaffer Raza.
