PESHAWAR: A Pak-Afghan peace jirga will be held in Peshawar on March 31 to urge the leadership of both countries to immediately de-escalate tensions and work towards peace, former chief secretary Arbab Shehzad Khan said here on Saturday. Speaking at a news conference at Peshawar Press Club, Mr Khan, who is head of Aspire Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, which, along with Qaumi Islahi Tehreek, is organising the jirga, said the forum would be attended by national and political leaders, tribal elders, religious scholars, members of civil society, traders and media representatives from KP as well as Afghans residing in Pakistan. Qaumi Islahi Tehreek chief Haji Sohrab Ali Khan was also present at the presser. PESHAWAR: Robbers broke into a National Bank branch on the eve of Eidul Fitr, exploiting a lack of overnight security to steal more than one million rupees in cash and jewellery worth Rs210 million, police said. The incident occurred on Friday night at a National Bank branch on Kohat Road. The robbers entered the facility from an open area at the back, using cutters and other tools to break in. Police said that with no guard on duty due to a “no security shift policy at night”, the robbers were able to steal Rs1.37m in cash from the registers. “They broke lockers and stole around 400 tolas of gold from safety lockers,” a police official said, adding that a gas cylinder was also used to cut through steel. The total value of the stolen jewellery was estimated at Rs 210m. PESHAWAR: Police repulsed an attack by unidentified militants, who targeted a police checkpoint in the Passani village located on the outskirts of Peshawar, officials said. President Asif Ali Zardari on Thursday approved the confirmation of a total of 27 additional judges of the Sindh, Lahore, and Peshawar high courts.
