  • Quetta split into two districts as Balochistan undergoes administrative restructuring

    The Balochistan government has announced several measures to restructure administrative units in the province, including splitting Quetta district into East Quetta and West Quetta, it emerged on Saturday. According to a notification issued by the Balochistan government’s Revenue Department on July 8, new divisions, districts, sub-divisions, tehsils and sub-tehsils have been created, while the boundaries of existing divisions and districts have also been realigned. As a result, the number of divisions in Balochistan now stands at 11, and the number of districts has risen to 41. One of the major decisions was the bifurcation of Quetta district into East Quetta and West Quetta along the railway line. East Quetta now comprises the Saddar, City and Sariab sub-divisions, while West Quetta consists of Kuchlak and the newly created Brewery and Panjpai sub-divisions.     QUETTA: Protesters who had been staging a sit-in at the Quetta Airport Road, triggered by the killing of five tribesmen, injuring of eight and the kidnapping of 11 others from Hanna Urak Valley, called off their protest after the release of the kidnapped people, following successful negotiations between Balochistan Chief Minister Sarfraz Bugti and leaders of the protest committee. On July 5, armed men attacked the Hann Urak Valley area on the outskirts of Quetta, killing five tribesmen, injuring eight others, and abducting 11 others. In protest against the incident, the family members and local tribesmen had blocked the Airport Road for five days, severely affecting city traffic. The protest sit-in was called off after 11 abducted tribesmen were released late Thursday night.     Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is chairing a high-level meeting in Quetta to discuss the security situation in Balochistan after multiple major terrorist incidents in the province in recent days.     An anti-terrorism court in Quetta has found Mahrang Baloch, chief organiser of the Baloch Yakjehti Committee, and another group leader guilty in a case involving the death of a security personnel during a protest in Gwadar in 2024 that turned violent. ATC Quetta-1 Judge Muhammad Ali Mobeen heard the case pertaining to the death of a Frontier Corps (FC) personnel who died as a result of injuries received from a mob pelting stones. BYC’s Mahrang, Sibghatullah Shahji and others were nominated in the case. After completing the hearing, the court announced the verdict on Monday, handing life sentences to Mahrang and Sibghatullah, the former’s lawyer Israr Jattak told the media.     QUETTA: A female doctor at the Provincial Civil Hospital in Quetta was seriously injured on Saturday when an employee of the hospital allegedly threw acid on her, police said. A senior official of the Civil Hospital told Dawn that the doctor suffered severe burn injuries to her face, chest, legs and other parts of her body. He added that she was shifted to a private hospital immediately after initial treatment at the Civil Hospital, and that arrangements were being made to transfer her to Karachi via air ambulance. Hospital sources said around 70 per cent of her body was affected in the incident. The suspect, who allegedly committed the act, escaped from the hospital after throwing acid on the doctor. According to police, the accused was killed in an encounter after law enforcers traced him to the area from where he was attempting to flee by bus.     QUETTA: Pakistan Rai­lways resumed train operations from Balochistan on Saturday, restoring services after a three-day suspension, railway officials said. According to the officials, train operations from the province have been fully restored, with the Jaffar Express departing from Quetta for Peshawar. They said that the return service of the Jaffar Express will also depart from Peshawar for Quetta as per the timetable, restoring connectivity between the province and other parts of the country. The Jaffar Express, the only train service from Quetta to Peshawar, was suspended last Sunday following a vehicle-borne suicide bombing that targeted a shuttle train near the Chaman railway crossing.
