MUZAFFARABAD: Sardar Ziaul Qamar of the PPP and Sardar Mir Akbar of the PML-N retained the lead in their respective constituencies in Bagh, after results were received from all 23 polling stations where repolling was held on Saturday. According to unofficial and unverified results, Qamar defeated the PML-N’s Mushtaq Ahmed Minhas in LA-15 (Central Bagh) by 1,891 votes. He secured 17,118 votes against Minhas’s 15,227. Repolling was held at nine polling stations in the constituency. It was the third consecutive defeat for Minhas in the constituency, who had entered electoral politics in 2016 under the banner of the PML-N, won that election and served as a minister during the following five years. Qamar, meanwhile, secured his second consecutive victory after winning the 2023 by-election. In LA-16 (Eastern Bagh), the PML-N’s Akbar defeated the PPP’s Sardar Qamaruz Zaman by 3,833 votes, securing 20,796 votes against his rival’s 16,963. • AJK polls: Rathore’s LA-17 Haveli victory disputed, local PML-N announces indefinite strike
    Dawn - 18:33 Aug 12, 2026
MUZAFFARABAD: A controversy emerged on Wednesday after the returning officer (RO) issued Form 27 declaring PPP’s Faisal Mumtaz Rathore, the sitting AJK prime minister, the winner from LA-17 (Haveli), despite rival PML-N candidate Engineer Mohsin Aziz being assured that the form would not be issued until the Election Commission took up his complaint. The development triggered fresh tensions in Haveli district, where PML-N workers announced a complete shutter-down strike and protest from Thursday (August 13) for an indefinite period. At a meeting in Forward Kahuta, chaired by PML-N Haveli president Syed Abid Bukhari, participants demanded that the Election Commission open all polling bags from LA-17, order a recount and determine the result on the basis of the original results issued by presiding officers at the polling stations. They warned that the scope of the protest would be expanded if the demand was not accepted. Polling in the constituency had been held on Monday amid serious allegations and counter-all...

  • 3rd phase of AJK elections: PML-N poised for gains in Poonch amid rigging allegations
    Dawn - 19:56 Aug 10, 2026
The PML-N appeared set to gain at least one seat in Poonch division, where four constituencies went to the polls on Monday amid allegations of rigging, violence and disruption, with polling suspended at some places. The biggest upset was the defeat of Muslim Conference president Sardar Attique Ahmed Khan in LA-14 (Dhirkot), a constituency from where he, and before him his uncle and father, had been elected in all nine elections since 1985. His defeat also appeared to underscore the political decline of what was once the largest and longest-ruling party in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), but was reduced to a marginal force following the emergence of the PML-N in 2010. Khan was defeated by Sajid Iqbal Abbasi, who contested his first election on the ticket of the little-known Awami Dast-o-Bazu Party, by a margin of more than 21,000 votes, according to unofficial and unverified results from 213 of the 214 polling stations. Observers attributed Abbasi’s victory largely to his hands-on efforts for the development of ...

Adviser to the Prime Minister on Political Affairs Rana Sanaullah said on Saturday that the PML-N would form the government in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) with a two-thirds majority. He made the remarks while addressing a rally in Bagh ahead of the third phase of elections in the region. The third phase was originally slated to be held in the 11 constituencies of Poonch division, but will now only be held in its Bagh and Haveli districts due to law and order concerns. Addressing the rally, Sanaullah said that in the first two phases, the PML-N had secured 24 seats. He said that six more seats were required for a two-thirds majority government. Expressing confidence that the public will vote for his PML-N, the minister asserted that four more seats would be added following the August 10 polls, while five more would be added when polls would be held in the rest of Poonch Division. “The PML-N will form a government with a two-thirds majority. • Bilawal claims 'certain elements' within PML-N are sowing division among allies, undermining PM Shehbaz
    Dawn - 12:49 Aug 07, 2026
PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari claimed on Friday that certain elements within the ruling PML-N were undermining Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and sowing discord between him and his political allies. The PPP and the PML-N have been engaged in a war of words since the latter emerged in the lead in Mirpur polls on July 27. The PML-N has also won the majority of the seats in the second phase, with the PPP accusing it of rigging and other violent tactics in both phases. The PPP chief was addressing an election rally in Azad Jammu and Kashmir’s Poonch district, where the third phase of elections in the region is slated to be held. “High-profile people are saying that the government has collapsed. I’m not saying that, nor am I casting doubt on the prime minister’s intentions. He’s a good man with good intentions. But what can he do when the people around him have bad intentions?” Bilawal asked. In reference to remarks he made earlier this week, the party chief highlighted that the PPP did not start the “countdo...
