  • Police in Peshawar allegedly open fire during protest by Khyber residents

    PESHAWAR: Police in the provincial capital allegedly resorted to firing and tear gas early on Tuesday to disperse a protest by tribesmen from Khyber district against a suspected quadcopter strike that killed a minor girl and injured six others. The protesters had gathered at the Hayatabad toll plaza to protest the death of a teenage girl in a suspected quadcopter strike in Bara’s Akkakhel area. Six other family members, including women and children, were injured in the attack. The site of the incident is located close to the Bara Bazaar. Hashim Afridi, one of the participants, told Dawn that about 150 tribesmen from Bara and other adjacent areas had gathered at the Hayatabad toll plaza to protest the quadcopter strike. He claimed that the police opened fire, apparently over some scuffle near a roadblock. However, he said there were no casualties, and no arrests were made.     Security forces killed 22 terrorists in a joint intelligence-based operation (IBO) in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Khyber District, Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said on Friday. According to the ISPR, on April 21 (Tuesday), security forces and law enforcement agencies conducted a joint IBO in Khyber on the reported presence of terrorists. During the operation, after an intense exchange of fire, “22 khawarij belonging to Indian-sponsored Fitna-al-Khwarij were sent to hell”, it said. Fitna al Khawarij is a term the state uses for terrorists belonging to the banned Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP). “Due to cowardice and fear of getting apprehended alive, khawarij resorted to indiscriminate firing, which resulted in [the] martyrdom of a 10-year-old innocent child,” the ISPR added.   • Afghan national among 3 ‘terrorists’ killed by CTD in KP’s Khyber

    The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) gunned down three “terrorists”, including an Afghan national, during an intelligence-based operation (IBO) carried out in Khyber district late on Friday night. Two among the three militants killed during the IBO, were involved in a suicide bombing in Peshawar which led to the deaths of a sub-inspector and a constable. A statement issued by the CTD said that the department conducted an IBO based on the reported presence of Fazal Noor, a commander of the banned militant Islamic State Khorasan Province (ISKP) and his group members in Ali Masjid area of the district. It added that as soon as the SWAT reached the spot, the militants opened fire which was retaliated and the exchange of fire continued for around 30 minutes.   • Khyber student dies after torture by school head

    KHYBER: A student died after he was tortured by the head of a primary school in Jamrud tehsil of Khyber district on Friday, the police said. They added that Waqar Ahmad, head of a private school in Sur Kamar locality, subjected a student of grade 5, Khiyal Mat Khan, to corporal punishment during the morning assembly, leaving him critically injured. The student later succumbed to his injuries in hospital. The police said that the school head used a stick to beat the student on head, neck, face and back, which caused his death. They said that they had arrested the accused when the matter was brought to their notice. Residents of Jamrud demanded exemplary punishment for the accused, and also an end to corporal punishment in educational institutions.
