  • Vitalik distances himself from nonprofit backed by SHIB donation
    Cointelegraph.com - 08:32 Mar 13, 2026
Vitalik distances himself from nonprofit backed by SHIB donationVitalik Buterin said he is no longer closely aligned with the Future of Life Institute after its strategy shifted following his 2021 SHIB donation. Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin said Friday that he is no longer closely aligned with the Future of Life Institute, a group that received SHIB tokens from him in 2021.  Buterin said the institute initially pitched a broad roadmap to reduce existential risks, including threats tied to artificial intelligence, biotechnology and nuclear weapons, along with wider public education and research initiatives. He said that vision helped motivate his Shiba Inu (SHIB) donation. Buterin said the institute later moved toward cultural and political advocacy around AI risks, an approach he described as materially different from the strategy outlined when he donated. Read more
  • Vitalik sells 17K ETH in one month after earmarking $45M for privacy
    Cointelegraph.com - 13:31 Feb 24, 2026
Vitalik sells 17K ETH in one month after earmarking $45M for privacyArkham data shows the Ethereum co-founder’s attributed wallets fell from about 241,000 ETH to 224,000 ETH this month. Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has reduced his Ether balance by about 17,000 ETH in one month after announcing plans to earmark $45 million worth of tokens for privacy projects. Buterin’s wallets tracked by Arkham held about 241,000 Ether (ETH) in early February, before a series of outflows reduced the combined balance to 224,000 ETH on Tuesday. The reduction comes amid continued selling by Buterin, including about 2,961 Ether worth $6.6 million over a three-day period earlier in the month. Onchain analysts reported that this accelerated recently as he sold $7 million worth of tokens in the past three days. Read more

  • Vitalik draws line between ‘real DeFi’ and centralized yield stablecoins
    Cointelegraph.com - 12:24 Feb 09, 2026
Vitalik draws line between ‘real DeFi’ and centralized yield stablecoinsThe Ethereum co-founder outlined alternative stablecoin models that he says better align with DeFi’s original promise of risk decentralization. Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin drew a clear boundary around what he considers “real” decentralized finance (DeFi), pushing back against yield-driven stablecoin strategies that he says fail to meaningfully transform risk.  In a discussion on X, Buterin said that DeFi derives its value from changing how risk is allocated and managed, not simply from generating yield on centralized assets.  Buterin’s comments come amid renewed scrutiny over DeFi’s dominant use cases, particularly in lending markets built around fiat-backed stablecoins like USDC (USDC).  Read more
  • Arbitrum, Optimism and Base weigh in after Vitalik questions L2 scaling model
    Cointelegraph.com - 11:18 Feb 04, 2026
Arbitrum, Optimism and Base weigh in after Vitalik questions L2 scaling modelBase’s Jesse Pollak says L2s can’t be “Ethereum but cheaper” as builders respond to Vitalik Buterin’s call for specialization. Several layer-2 builders responded after Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin said the original vision of L2s as the primary scaling engine “no longer makes sense,” calling for a shift toward specialization. In a Wednesday post, Buterin argued that many L2s have failed to fully inherit Ethereum’s security due to continued reliance on multisig bridges, while the base layer is increasingly capable of handling more throughput via gas-limit increases and future native rollups. The comments prompted responses from Ethereum layer 2s, who broadly agreed that rollups must evolve beyond being cheaper versions of Ethereum but diverged on whether scaling should remain central to their role. • Ethereum may finally kill “trust me” wallets in 2026, and Vitalik says the fix is already shipping
    CryptoSlate - 20:55 Jan 18, 2026
Vitalik Buterin framed 2026 as the year Ethereum reverses a decade of convenience-first compromises. His thesis: the protocol stayed trustless, but the defaults drifted. Wallets outsourced verification to centralized RPCs. Decentralized applications became server-dependent behemoths that leak user data to dozens of endpoints. Block building is concentrated in the hands of a few sophisticated actors. • Vitalik calls for a ‘garbage collection’ function to stop Ethereum bloat
    Cointelegraph.com - 11:41 Jan 18, 2026
Vitalik calls for a ‘garbage collection’ function to stop Ethereum bloatVitalik Buterin warns that Ethereum’s push to add new features while preserving backward compatibility is inflating protocol complexity, calling for a “garbage collection” process. Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin is urging developers to confront the protocol bloat driven by an endless push to add new features while rarely removing old ones. In a Sunday post on X, Buterin argued that true trustlessness and self-sovereignty depend less on raw decentralization metrics and more on simplicity. “Even if a protocol is super decentralized with hundreds of thousands of nodes, and it has 49% byzantine fault tolerance, and nodes fully verify everything with quantum-safe peerdas and starks, if the protocol is an unwieldy mess of hundreds of thousands of lines of code and five forms of PhD-level cryptography, ultimately that protocol fails,” he claimed Read more
  • Vitalik’s take on decentralized stablecoins: What it means for DeFi
    Cointelegraph.com - 17:05 Jan 14, 2026
Vitalik’s take on decentralized stablecoins: What it means for DeFiVitalik Buterin argues DeFi still lacks resilient decentralized stablecoins, highlighting benchmark risk, oracle design flaws and staking-driven incentives. A decentralized stablecoin aims to maintain a stable value while being issued and managed onchain, without relying on a single company to mint or redeem dollars. Stablecoins are already central to decentralized finance (DeFi). Because fiat money is not native to blockchains, stablecoins perform the day-to-day role of moving value between protocols and acting as collateral. Read more
  • Vitalik: Crypto Needs Financial Tools That Grow Wealth, Not Reckless Leverage Bets
    Cryptonews.com - 13:57 Jan 10, 2026
Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin distinguished between "the open web" and "the sovereign web" in Farcaster post, urging developers to build privacy-preserving applications and wealth-building tools without dangerous leverage while criticizing "corposlop" corporate platforms optimizing for engagement and data extraction at users' expense through walled gardens and dopamine-maximizing algorithms. • Ethereum isn’t chasing 5.3% yield, Vitalik says – but the outage risk is over 5× bigger than regulation shocks
    CryptoSlate - 16:25 Jan 06, 2026
Ethereum was not created to make finance efficient or apps convenient. It was designed to set people free. That line from the Trustless Manifesto drew criticism when it was published, and Vitalik Buterin repeated it on Jan. 5. The argument: Ethereum's mission differs fundamentally from the efficiency game DeFi protocols compete in. The goal is […] The post Ethereum isn’t chasing 5.3% yield, Vitalik says – but the outage risk is over 5× bigger than regulation shocks appeared first on CryptoSlate.
