  • China-EU trade war erupts as Beijing files WTO complaint over EV tariff hikes
    Armenian News - Tert.am - 07:10 Oct 30, 2024
A trade war between China and the European Union was set to intensify after Beijing said it had lodged a complaint with the World Trade Organization following a move by the European Union to hike tariffs on Chinese-made electric vehicles. China’s commerce ministry on Wednesday said in a statement that it “does not agree with or accept” the EU’s decision to proceed with extra duties on the EVs after the conclusion of an anti-subsidy probe that began last year. A final ruling published by the European Commission on Tuesday stated that a top rate of 35.3 per cent would be applied to EVs from Chinese state-owned company SAIC Motor and its subsidiaries, in addition to a baseline 10 per cent duty that applies to all EV imports.

United Nations Security Council members urged Israel and Iran on Monday to end their spiraling cycle of tit-for-tat attacks on one another, following Israel’s retaliatory strikes against Iran. “All sides must exercise restraint. No good can come of pouring more fuel on the flames of this escalating cycle of violence,” said British Ambassador Barbara Woodward. Iran’s foreign minister requested the Security Council meet in an emergency session following an early Saturday wave of airstrikes by Israel that struck missile factories in three Iranian provinces. Council members Algeria, China and Russia supported Tehran’s request. “Now West Jerusalem is trying to involve Iran in confrontation -- Iran, which is showing unprecedented restraint under the circumstances,” Russian ambassador Vassily Nebenzia said, referring to Israel. Russia is a close ally of Iran. “It is very difficult not to have the impression that West Jerusalem is intentionally raising tensions, despite the signals from Tehran that they are ready to ...

Reports of pressure on voters, particularly on public sector employees, remained widespread in the campaign. This, coupled with extensive tracking of voters on election day, raised concerns about the ability of some voters ...

  • Boycott COP climate summit if Putin shows, Ukraine tells West
    Armenian News - Tert.am - 09:29 Oct 17, 2024
The international community should shun the COP29 climate summit in Azerbaijan if Russian President Vladimir Putin attends, a top Ukrainian diplomat told POLITICO. "We need to exert this pressure and our partners need to make it clear to Azerbaijan that, if Putin is there, they aren’t coming," said Ukraine's EU ambassador, Vsevolod Chentsov, in an interview. Chentsov's call comes after the Kremlin said Tuesday that Putin was considering attending the annual U.N.-backed climate gathering, which begins Nov. 11 in Baku, Azerbaijan's capital. "A decision has not yet been made," Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov told Russian state-run news outlet RIA Novosti. Chentsov noted that Azerbaijan was increasingly “quite dependent” on the EU, given the bloc's pivot to the oil and gas-rich South Caucasus nation to help replace Russian fossil fuels. "They want to foster cooperation with the EU, and they should be really careful in that regard," the Ukrainian diplomat said, arguing that gave Brussels key leverage over Baku....

    Armenian News - Tert.am - 08:41 Oct 14, 2024
Nasa is poised to send a spacecraft to a frosty moon of Jupiter where extraterrestrial life may eke out an existence in an enormous ocean hidden beneath its ice-covered surface. The Europa Clipper mission is due to blast off from Kennedy Space Center in Florida at 12.06pm local time on Monday after the original plan to launch on Thursday was scrapped due to the battering winds brought by Hurricane Milton. Barring any further snags, the six-ton spacecraft – the largest Nasa has ever built for a planetary mission – will fly past Mars and swing back around Earth before slingshotting out to Jupiter, covering nearly 2bn miles before reaching its destination in 2030. While the $5bn (£3.8bn) mission will not look for life itself on the frigid Jovian moon, the probe’s suite of instruments will scour Europa’s surface for fingerprints of organic compounds and sniff for gases released from the moon to assess whether it is habitable.   “It’s a chance for us to explore not a world that might have been habitable billions o...

  • Biden won’t support a strike on Iran nuclear sites as Israel weighs response to Iran missile attack
    Armenian News - Tert.am - 06:48 Oct 03, 2024
President Joe Biden said Wednesday he will not support an Israeli strike on sites related to Tehran’s nuclear program in response to Iran’s missile attack on Israel. “The answer is no,” Biden told reporters when asked if he would support such retaliation after Iran fired about 180 missiles at Israel on Tuesday. Biden’s comments came after he and fellow Group of Seven leaders from Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan and the United Kingdom spoke by telephone about coordinating new sanctions against Iran. The U.S. and allies are scrambling to keep the Mideast conflict — sparked by Iran-backed Hamas militants’ in Gaza’s Oct. 7 attack on Israel — from spreading further. They are urging Israel to show restraint as it weighs retaliation against Iran for Tuesday’s attack.
