Foreign Minister Israel Katz announces that he has designated UN Secretary General António Guterres “persona non grata,” meaning the Portuguese diplomat cannot enter Israel. The Foreign Ministry says the decision is a reaction to Guterres’s response after Iran’s missile attack last night, “in which he failed to mention Iran by name and did not unequivocally condemn its grave aggression.” Israel Guterres’s policies throughout the war have “provided backing to terrorists, rapists and murderers from Hamas, Hezbollah, and the Houthis, and now to the mothership of global terror, Iran.” In a statement, Katz says that “anyone who cannot unequivocally condemn Iran’s heinous attack on Israel, as nearly all the countries of the world have done, does not deserve to set foot on Israeli soil.” -

Ucom has published the financial results for 2023, approved by external audit. The revenue generated in 2023 was over 38 billion AMD, which marks a 5.7% increase compared to the previous year. Moreover, there was revenue growth recorded in both fixed internet services (+12.3% increase compared to 2022) and mobile services (+13.5% compared to 2022). The revenue increase was driven by the growth of the subscriber base in both fixed and mobile segments, supported by network expansion in the regions and continuous modernization of mobile and fixed networks, as well as ongoing improvement of convergent services. The company’s results from operating activities significantly improved, reaching 11.9 billion AMD compared to 1.3 billion AMD in 2022, while net profit was 5.6 billion AMD, compared to 4.3 billion AMD in 2022. Tobacco cultivation in Armenia began in the early 19th century, and the Yerevan Tobacco Factory was established in 1924. This time, Ucom and SunChild NGO introduced their cooperative project in Chakaten settlement of Kapan community, Syunik region. A solar plant with an installed capacity of 9.28 kWh has been installed on the roof of the Chakaten local municipality building, aimed at promoting environmentally and economically sustainable living in border areas. The energy generated by the solar panels will be enough to cover the electricity needs of the local municipality building, as well as the settlement’s outdoor lighting, significantly reducing community expenses. Border communities like Chakaten face many challenges, often without sufficient funds to address them. Through this program, Ucom and SunChild NGO are working to help solve these issues. A surface-to-surface ballistic missile was fired at Israel from Yemen on Sunday morning, the third time the Iran-backed Houthis apparently successfully penetrated Israeli air defenses. The missile caused the activation of sirens across central Israel at around 6:30 a.m., with alerts heard from the east of Tel Aviv to Modiin. There were reports that the missile impacted an open area in the Ben Shemen forest, sparking a fire near Kfar Daniel, a few kilometers southeast of Ben Gurion Airport. Shrapnel damage was reported at a train station on the outskirts of Modiin, some 25 kilometers (18 miles) east of Tel Aviv. The IDF initially reported that the missile struck an open area, but later said that it was also investigating the results of interceptor missiles launched at the projectile. On August 18–19, Russian President Vladimir Putin paid a two-day visit to Azerbaijan (President.az, August 19). This marked the first state visit by a Russian president to the South Caucasian republic and only the second visit in the bilateral relationship since former Azerbaijani President Heydar Aliyev’s trip to Moscow in 2002. Contrary to expectations from local observers, the visit did not yield any significant agreements or binding political and economic arrangements. Five more students from the Yerevan State University have been awarded nominal scholarships from Byblos Bank Armenia, each receiving 1 million drams. The students were chosen from the 3rd and 4th years of undergraduate studies as well as the 1st year of the master's program in the Faculty of Economics and Management. Typhoon Yagi, Asia’s most powerful storm this year, has left dozens dead since sweeping across southern China and Southeast Asia last week, leaving a trail of destruction with its intense rainfall and powerful winds. After hitting the Philippines, where it killed more than a dozen people, it churned westwards towards southern China and shortly after parts of Vietnam, Thailand, Myanmar and Laos. Nearly a week since it made landfall, many farms and villages in northern parts of Vietnam and neighboring Thailand remain under water as communities struggle to cope with severe flooding and the looming threat of landslides. Within the 10th annual TSCFP Awards held in Singapore by the Asian Development Bank, Armeconombank was granted the Gender Champion award. For a long time, the Bank has kept female involvement at the core of its strategy, both in terms of women's advancement inside the organization itself and lending to women entrepreneurs. Since 2018, the Bank has attracted resources equivalent to more than USD 65m from international partners for projects supporting women and, parallel to business funding, has been provided with technical assistance aimed at increasing the financial literacy of female entrepreneurs and implementation of successful projects, among others,. Meanwhile, women make about 65% of the bank's personnel, and about 15% of them hold managerial positions.
