Ebrahim Raisi, the eighth president of Iran, has been martyred after a helicopter carrying him and his entourage crashed in Varzaqan region in East Azarbaijan Province, northwest of the country. Raisi’s helicopter, along with two more copters, was en route to Tabriz City on Sunday after he inaugurated Qiz Qalasi Dam at the border with the Azerbaijan Republic earlier in the day. Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian, East Azarbaijan Province’s Governor Malek Rahmati, and Mehdi Mousavi, the head of Raisi’s bodyguard team were on board the crashed aircraft as well. Mohammad Ali Al-e-Hashem, the Supreme Leader’s representative in the province also accompanied them. Local officials present at the crash site have confirmed the martyrdom of Raisi and his accompanying team. Ebrahim Raisi, 63, was born in the holy city of Mashhad. He was elected president in 2021. A Turkish court on Thursday sentenced Selahattin Demirtas, the former leader of the pro-Kurdish People's Democratic Party, or HDP, to 42 years in prison for his alleged role in deadly protests in 2014 that were triggered by an Islamic State attack on the Syrian Kurdish town of Kobani. Another leading pro-Kurdish politician, Figen Yuksekdag, was sentenced to just over 30 years. Many other senior HDP figures were convicted among a total of 108 defendants charged with 29 offenses, including murder and harming the unity of the Turkish state. At least 10 other defendants were acquitted of the charges against them. The politicians are expected to appeal the verdicts. "Yerevan, May 17, 2024 - The Azerbaijani court has once again extended the pre-trial detention of Ruben Vardanyan, Armenian philanthropist, and former State Minister of Artsakh, who has been illegally detained in Baku since September 27, 2023. For eight months, the Azerbaijani authorities have flouted international law and human decency by keeping Ruben incarcerated without trial and without any proper process. They still refuse to say when any proper trial or hearing will take place on their so called charges. Armeconombank and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) have signed an AMD loan agreement equivalent to 10m USD within the framework of the 33rd EBRD Business Forum. This collaboration is aimed also at the balanced development of the country as a part of the funds will be allocated to the financing of businesses in the regions of Armenia. This agreement is already the 15th since 2000 and brings the total amount of the funds provided by this particular partner to USD 83.0m. -

Ahead of the Students and Youth Day in Armenia, Yerevan State University students who received scholarships from Byblos Bank Armenia gathered in a casual setting to meet with the Bank's CEO, Hayk Stepanyan. The Bank and the university have a history of successful collaboration. One of the key projects implemented to celebrate the 15th anniversary of the Bank in 2023 was the memorandum of cooperation signed with the university. During the 2023-2024 academic year, 10 YSU students were granted nominal scholarships of AMD 1 million each, while five others received tuition reimbursement. May 16 marks Students and Youth Day, as well as the day of the foundation of YSU, which served as an opportunity for scholarship recipients to express how support from the Bank further fueled their motivation. Former U.S. President Donald Trump's private Boeing 757 clipped another corporate jet while taxiing at West Palm Beach International Airport in Florida on Sunday, a source familiar with the incident said on Tuesday. The Federal Aviation Administration said in a statement that a privately owned 757 contacted a parked and unoccupied corporate jet at the south Florida airport. The FAA statement did not identify the plane as belonging to Trump.The incident occurred in an area of the airport where the FAA does not direct aircraft, the agency said, adding that it is investigating, Reuters reports. The US last week paused a bomb shipment for Israel over concerns it was going ahead with a major ground operation in the southern Gaza city of Rafah, a senior US administration official says. The shipment consisted of 1,800 2,000lb (907kg) bombs and 1,700 500lb bombs, the official told CBS News, the BBC's media partner in the US. Israel has not "fully addressed" US concerns over humanitarian needs of civilians in Rafah, the official says. Israel made no immediate comment. Heavy rains which caused widespread flooding in the southern Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul have left hundreds of towns under water, BBC reports. At least 85 people died in the floods and about 150,000 have been displaced from their homes, officials said. The Oxford-AstraZeneca Covid vaccine is being withdrawn worldwide, months after the pharmaceutical giant admitted for the first time in court documents that it can cause a rare and dangerous side effect, The Telegraph reports The vaccine can no longer be used in the European Union after the company voluntarily withdrew its “marketing authorisation”. The application to withdraw the vaccine was made on March 5 and came into effect on Tuesday. Similar applications will be made in the coming months in the UK and in other countries that had approved the vaccine, known as Vaxzevria.
